Fall is the right time for a little wade fishing. There’s little doubt that shallow water fishing will pick up as the season progresses, with redfish and trout littered all over the flats — but the snook bite will turn off gradually. Now is the time to jump on those snook, which are in transition right now as they start to make their way back up into the canals and upriver to their wintertime haunts.

A recent flats fishing trip where we were actually targeting redfish produced quite a few decent snook. A few friends and I had decided to fish last weekend’s pre-frontal conditions along the east wall. The water was as slick as glass and clear as far as our eyes could see. Schools of ladyfish were busting out beyond the bar and numerous schools of glass minnows covered the flat. We knew what kind of day we had ahead of us.
