I am inquiring as to your editorial position on the proposed Calusa Green landfill. As I understand, the proposed landfill will border on the edge of feeder system of creeks and rivers of the Peace River. The agriculture community has come out in strong force since there are $20 million in fruit trees that surround the proposed landfill. My research suggest that the concept of a waterproof membrane liner is more myth then fact. It is disappointing that a major family which is leader in the region for waterfront development, fishery, etc. is also the major financial benefactor of the landfill. I hope this respected family comes out and explains what appears to be an obvious conflict in mission for the Harbor and our community. If I am correct, as a county we have sufficient landfill capacity and this new landfill that has serious potential to threaten the quality of our ecosystem will primarily bring garbage from outside our county. It just seems pure stupid to work on one hand for Mote Marine to come to Charlotte Harbor to study our ecosystem and offer science-based solutions, then on the other hand knowingly allow landfills that we know will pollute our ecosystem. What is your position on the issue? I urge folks to Google Calusa Green and donate what they can to fight what could destroy our environment and way of life.
