Betty Smith
Mary O. “Betty” Smith, 94, of Venice, formerly of Elmira and Peekskill, N.Y., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2012. She was born April 8, 1918.
Betty graduated with honors in 1936 from Elmira Free Academy and from Elmira Business Institute in 1938. She married Donald Smith in 1942 at Lake Street Presbyterian Church, Elmira, where she was active for many years, including serving as a Sunday School teacher. Later, she joined Peekskill Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and was a member for more than 20 years. After moving to Venice, she joined Venice Presbyterian Church.
Throughout her live she was an active volunteer, including working for the Peekskill Community Hospital as a member of the auxiliary, PTAs, Headstart, leadership in both the Boy and Girl Scouts and at the South County Food Pantry in Venice. An avid bridge player, Betty loved playing cards and other games with her family and friends.
Betty and Don spent every summer at the cottage they built on Seneca Lake, with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching them to enjoy nature and water sports. Betty was loved and admired by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her son, Rick (Pat) of Trumansburg, N.Y.; daughter, Betsy (Paul DeLaney) of Glenmont, N.Y.; grandchildren, Stephanie Smith (John DeRisi), Jeremy Smith (Elizabeth), Allison Pinto (Gregg) and Alex Voetsch; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Donald K. Smith; her parents, Frank and Ivah (LeValley) Olney; her brother, Raymond Olney; and her sister, Katherine Rogala.
Services: A memorial service will be held at a later date in Valois, N.Y.
