A Venice woman with a history of starting fires was arrested Sunday night after setting her home ablaze while her husband was out buying batteries for their smoke alarms, police said.

Neighbors flagged down a passing Venice police officer on patrol in the area and pointed to the house at 716 Laurel Ave., which had smoke billowing out the front door, according to a VPD probable cause affidavit.
