A loggerhead sea turtle comes ashore to make a nest during the day, a rare occurrence. Englewood area beaches are among the densest on Florida's Gulf coast for sea turtle nesting. Hundreds of volunteers help patrol beaches daily during nesting season.
Wildlife researchers are celebrating 2012 as a banner year for sea turtle nesting throughout Florida, with almost a 24-year record for loggerhead nest counts.
Locally, sea turtle nesting is also a cause for celebration.
