As the clock wound down to triple zeros in the final quarter of a junior varsity girls’ basketball game on Jan. 17, Charlotte High School freshman Nicole Jones launched a long 3-point shot. The buzzer sounded just as the ball dusted the net.

Team members for Charlotte rushed onto the court and congratulated Jones with hugs, cheers and high-fives. Moments later, as they left the locker room, they were still chanting: “Yeah, Nicole.”
