Joan Mather Garrenton, 69, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Bethel, N.C., and graduated from Wake Forest University.

A Punta Gorda resident since 1977, Joan retired from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in 2010.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Dana) Weekley; grandchildren, Dawson and Madison; sister, Connie Hackney of Washington, N.C.; and devoted friend, Celesta Johnson. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Connell Garrenton and Hilda Mather Garrenton; and sisters, Barbara and Betty, all of North Carolina.

Services were private. Memorial donations to Tidewell Hospice are appreciated.
