Frances Glockler Hein
Frances Glockler Hein, 89, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Harbor Health Care in Port Charlotte, Fla.
She was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Pasadena, Calif., to George and Ruby Clift Glockler.
Frances graduated from the University High School in Minnesota and University of Iowa. It was in Iowa that she met Richard, and they married in 1944. Having four boys over a six-year time span kept her busy, but being a mom was the delight of her life. Frances cared for and nurtured her sons, giving them roots and a foundation for living, then wings to set them free to grow and mature. In 1957, they moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., where Frances continued to raise her sons, never missing a sporting event, and always having a delicious meal made in a small kitchen when everyone arrived home for dinner. Frances loved math, and in 1964, accepted a teaching position at Winchester Thurston School in Shadyside, Pittsburgh. There she taught for over 20 years algebra, geometry and trigonometry. One of her most challenging accomplishments was teaching algebra to twin sisters who were blind. In addition to her teaching and raising her family, Frances loved playing golf and bridge. She enjoyed her affiliation with PEO, and the family vacations, especially their annual Canadian fishing trips. Frances’ faith was always important to her and became increasingly so when she and Richard retired to Port Charlotte. There they became active members of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd where she was instrumental in the development of their school and participated regularly in the healing ministry of the church.
She is survived by her sons, David (Rosalie) of Billings, Mont., Steven (Katharine) of Wilmington, N.C., and James (Suzanne) of Saugus, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Susan Hein of Bolton, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; son, Richard W.; and her sister, Margaret.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Today, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 401 Henry Street Punta Gorda, Fla. The Rev. Roy Tuff officiating.
