Some children’s play blocks have letters of the alphabet printed on each side. Words are formed by arranging letters in an appropriate order. How the same sets of letter blocks are arranged make a big difference in what words are created. For example, reverse the spelling of “dog” and you get “god.” Flip-flop the letters that form the word evil and you’ll have live. What we choose as the building blocks of life and how we order them determines the outcome of our choices.
Certain blocks foundational to building up God’s house, Christ’s Church, are listed in Ephesians 4:11 as Christ’s gifts to His Church. The first two, apostles and prophets, are paramount figures in a beautiful truth pictured in Ephesians 2:19-21. There, we “are no longer foreigners, but fellow citizens and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.”
