The Fabric of Our Faith: Treasures of truth — priests

F ew headlines grab us more today than clergy arrested for moral impropriety or unlawful behavior. In an increasingly godless society, we’re still disappointed when priests or ministers disavow God’s honor and/or holiness. God expected nothing less of his Old Testament priests. If the judgment upon Aaron’s sons, priests Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10:1-3), was doled out upon the clergy for acts of spiritual disobedience today, our seminaries and Bible Colleges would be poorly attended.

God’s expectations of priests serving Him in holiness and honor occur in Leviticus 10:8‑11. There the Lord said to Aaron, “You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for generations to come, so you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.”
