Hugh Brotherton was hunting in the woods of northern Michigan, huddled in a deer blind in frigid November temperatures, when he got word that his son James had been shot to death and his body left on the side of the road in Sarasota.

Despite being awake for 12 hours, Brotherton jumped in his car and immediately drove 1,700 miles to Southwest Florida, stopping only for gas along the way as he desperately rushed to learn what had become of his 49-year-old son.
