How we honor those who have served

A few months ago, Lillian Miller attended the funeral of her brother-in-law at Denver’s Fort Logan National Cemetery. The Air Force veteran served at a weather station in Turkey in the mid-1950s. The moving service included an honor guard and an impressive three-round rifle volley.

However, the 91-year-old Port Charlotte resident said it was dramatically different from her husband’s funeral in 1981. Serving in the Army Air Force in World War II and participating in six bombing missions over Germany, he was buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, but “with no fanfare.”
