NORTH PORT — Pat Myers cried in gratitude after being asked to give up one of two broken-down vehicles in place of a 2010 Honda Civic.

After Brian Irvin, general manager of Charlotte Honda & Volkswagen, read about 17-year-old North Porter Ashley Krueger, who is bravely battling two types of cancer — Ewing’s sarcoma and T-cell lymphoma — and is in need of a bone-marrow transplant, he wanted to help her and her family. Myers, Ashley’s caregiver, said the two vehicles used by herself and Ashley’s mother, Cindi Krueger, a nurse, were in need of major repairs leading up to Ashley’s bone-marrow transplant surgery in the next two months. The family recently asked the community for help after receiving a to-do list from the hospital that includes the cars having to be professionally detailed and all the windows tinted dark because sunlight can cause grafted bone marrow to be rejected.
