Inmates to help out at Springs

NORTH PORT — In lieu of staying in jail Friday, a handful of nonviolent offenders are scheduled to spend time at Warm Mineral Springs Day Spa skimming algae off the surface of the water.

Immediately after receiving the keys to the city’s only tourist attraction, Dr. Grigory Pogrebinsky of WMS Sarasota Management LLC, which last month won the short-term, 12-month bid to operate the Springs, said the doors can’t open until more safety issues are resolved.
