A statewide texting-while-driving ban officially becomes law Tuesday, largely due to the efforts of state Sen. Nancy Detert. Studies conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conclude a texting driver is 23 times more likely to cause a crash than one who is not, and driving while texting is six times more dangerous than driving drunk.

State Sen. Nancy Detert will come to Venice High School at 9 a.m. Tuesday to help promote the statewide texting ban legislation she sponsored, which officially goes into law that day.

“We’re very excited the law is going into effect,” said Detert, R-Venice. “And we’re going to alert the public about it.”
