NORTH PORT — Saying her taxpayer-funded travel budget shouldn’t be scrutinized just because one person complained about her spending $1,305 on trips to Key West and Sanibel Island, North Port City Commissioner Cheryl Cook recently argued she doesn’t want to be micromanaged.
“I don’t see any reason why we should change our travel arrangement because of one person,” Cook said in a meeting last week during commissioners’ discussions on approving one another’s travel ahead of time. “I don’t see that we have to protect the commission and micromanage our personal travel accounts. This (travel requests) goes through a process by three departments before any of us can take a trip, and just because one person decides to complain and the newspaper made a big deal of it … I’m surprised it was even brought up.”
