A short-lived perennial plant that produces a tasty crop, has attractive yellow and red flowers, and can even serve as a quick living fence, the pigeon pea is a versatile edible ornamental that does well in our summer vegetable gardens.
Also called Congo pea or gandule, pigeon peas are originally from India, where this crop has been grown for over 3,000 years. This legume is now grown worldwide in tropical climates for the fresh or dried peas, as a forage crop, and even a cover crop.
