The dwarf papyrus

The umbrella sedge, or umbrella plant.

Papyrus, or Egyptian papyrus.

Text Size:

Known for their ease of culture and attractive nature in a variety of landscape settings, ornamental plants commonly called papyrus, or umbrella, plants make stunning accents in the garden.

The umbrella sedge, the dwarf umbrella sedge, the papyrus, and the dwarf papyrus are all in the genus cyperus. Cyperus are plants called sedges that more or less display an umbrella-like appearance. They are also all related to the not-so-popular nutsedge, which is a notorious weed in our landscapes. However, these selected cyperus species are useful in water gardens, planters, and borders, where they form a graceful mass of texture.
