NORTH PORT — Time is running out to purchase tickets for the First Heart Gala fundraiser sponsored by the North Port Coalition for Homeless/Needy Children, aka the Back Pack Angels, at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at Heron Creek Golf & Country Club, off Sumter Boulevard.

Sixty dollars of the $100 ticket price of the benefit goes directly to the fund to buy hygiene products and toiletries that are delivered by the Coalition to all North Port schools, preschools and service agencies. About 400 bags per month are given to the needy and homeless. The Back Pack Angels work with school social workers to identify those who are the most in need. The evening will include dinner, dancing, entertainment and a large silent auction with gifts like decor items, artwork, jewelry, gift certificates for restaurants, golf, tennis, gift baskets and clothing. There will also be a raffle for a handmade quilt donated by Kathy Vondette, a BPA volunteer. The program is run entirely by volunteers and has been successful for nearly three years.
