NORTH PORT — A Fort Myers Beach woman was killed Wednesday when she overcorrected after her SUV began to drift into another lane on Interstate 75. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Irene Anderson, 77, was traveling south on I-75 in her 2004 Chevy Trailblazer at 10:35 a.m. when she drifted into the left lane, which was occupied by another vehicle. Anderson tried to correct, steering hard to the right, the report states, and as a result traveled onto the grass shoulder. In trying to get back on the roadway, she then crossed both southbound lanes of I-75 and onto the median, her SUV rotating clockwise. Her tires caught in the grass and the vehicle overturned several times before coming to rest on it’s roof near mile marker 173, in between the Toledo Blade Boulevard and Kings Highway exits. Anderson, who was wearing her seatbelt, was pronounced dead on the scene. It is not known whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, the report states.

Later Wednesday afternoon, while authorities were still cleaning up the site of the crash, traffic was moving slowly around the scene. Around 2:10 p.m., Rigoberto Gonzalez, 55, of Hialeah, Fla., was traveling south on I-75 between the River Road and Sumter Boulevard exits in the right travel lane. At mile marker 186, Gonzalez said, another southbound vehicle cut him off. He applied the tractor-trailer’s air brakes and attempted an evasive maneuver. The semi veered off the interstate and jack-knifed on the west should of I-75, the report shows. Gonzalez was wearing a seat belt. No charges are pending.
