NORTH PORT — A four-vehicle pileup in front of Home Depot just before midnight Christmas Eve sent several people to area medical facilities.

According to a North Port police report, 21-year-old Sean R. Brown was traveling south on U.S. 41, approaching the traffic signal at Sumter Crossing at 11:55 p.m. Monday. Three vehicles in front of him were all stopped at a red light. Brown told police a cup fell from the console of the 1990 Ford Bronco he was driving and lodged behind the brake pedal. The Bronco, traveling at about 45 mph, slammed into the back of a 2012 Ford Escort, a rental car driven by Daniel E. Weaver, 33, of Mishawaka, Ind., causing massive damage to the back of the vehicle, the report shows. The impact caused the Escort to be pushed forward into a 2010 Toyota Highlander, and that vehicle to be pushed into a 2005 Honda Accord. Brown, of North Port, was taken to the North Port ER on Toledo Blade Boulevard. He was cited for careless driving. Weaver was also taken to the North Port ER. A passenger in his car, Danny D. Prater Jr., 33, also of Indiana, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota. All were wearing their seat belts, the report shows. No other injuries were reported.
