City off to court over charter vote
NORTH PORT — Linda Yates may not actually be the mayor of the North Port City Commission.
Despite the results of the Nov. 6 election — with 55 percent of residents voting favorably for the title of mayor to replace the “chair” of the commission — city staff failed to legally advertise the five charter amendment questions on the ballot. That means the four city charter amendments that passed could be void, including the third question — changing the title of chair to mayor — and the second — splitting the city into five districts, creating a residency requirement for commissioners.
