The great historic singer and composer of the Bible by the name of David, composed a song in Psalms 8 and he started and ended the song with these words: “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth … !” Then he expresses how God speaks through the mouths of immature infants when he said: “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings has thou ordained strength …”

The psalmist really put it in perspective when he said: “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou has ordained. What is (little ole) man, that thou art mindful of him? And even the sons and daughters of a man, that thou would even visit him?

Yet “thou has made him a little lower than the heavenly Angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor; you made him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; you have put all things under his feet — including all sheep, oxen, and beasts of the field; the fowl of the air, the fish of the sea and everything that passes through the seas!” The Psalmist seems to be wondering, why man? With all of his faults, failures and frailties! Why man? With all of his imperfections! It is as if he is saying — seems to me God, that you could have had another alternative to man! Then he seems to conclude with the thought: I know why man. “O Lord our Lord,” It is because of your unsearchable “excellence, associated with thou name throughout the whole earth!”

The Psalmist, David, expresses my exact sentiments. Why man, but more specifically, why me, at the tender age of 13? But David said that He is so excellent, that “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings he ordains strength.” So when I look at the unworthiness of humanity, I readily join in with the Psalmist and say: “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth.”

So please let me say a big thank you to everyone far and near. Those who came from all across the United States; across Florida; across Polk County and all throughout the city of Lake Wales. A special thank you to my precious and darling wife Sandra who was with, and supported me for 42 of those 50 years; to my children — Candice, Anthony and Joseph Jr. for their support and understanding; to my dad, my father-in-law and my many siblings who came from all across the country; to my 50-member head table guests; to our special sponsors who are listed on the back of our program, along with our chief sponsor, the First Institutional Missionary Baptist Church for helping to make this historic occasion a reality! And to those who wanted to come but had a scheduling conflict, we thank you so very much!

And for my 50 years of ministerial sojourn, and for all that was said and occurred on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, to God, be all the glory!

Rev. J. J. Pierce, Sr.

First Institutional Missionary Baptist Church Inc. Lake Wales
