NEW YORK (AP) — A Florida man is charged in New York with trying to sell fake works attributed to the British artist Damien Hirst.

Manhattan prosecutors say Kevin Sutherland, of Miami, depicted several works as limited edition prints by the contemporary artist. He was indicted Thursday on attempted grand larceny charges.

According to court documents, Sutherland submitted a painting purportedly by Hirst to Sotheby’s for consideration for a March auction. Sutherland allegedly said he also owned another Hirst painting.

The auction house and Hirst’s London studio determined that the works were counterfeits.

Sutherland was arrested after allegedly offering the two works, plus three other fakes, for $185,000 to an undercover officer.

His attorney, Sanford Talkin, said there’s more to the story and the defense is looking forward to its day in court.
