Unsung heroes of the American Revolutionary War are teaching lessons in patriotism to Lake Wales students. Winners of the annual American History Essay Contest, sponsored by the Lake Wales Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, wrote about Deborah Sampson, our nation’s first woman soldier.
“We know about the great patriots in history, so this year national wanted to call attention to the forgotten ones, the unsung heroes,” explained Sylvia Hitchcock Carson, DAR historian. “We want to make children more aware of history because we learn from history. It’s all of us together uniting in a common goal of freedom.”
