The Lake Wales NAACP Youth Council #5768 kicked off the annual Kwanzaa celebration at the James P. Austin Center. Created by Maulana Karenga in 1966, the week-long celebration that ends Jan. 1 honors African heritage. Its seven core principles are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
