A turkey for every table

Monday morning was a joyous occasion, and these ladies did not let the chilly temperatures keep them indoors. Toting their turkeys and Publix gift certificates, they say the food will come in handy over Thanksgiving. From left: Kiran Lauderdale, age 6, joins Silkie Craft and LaKirstan Davis. When asked if she had a special recipe for cooking her turkey, Silkie said that she's going to let her Mama do the cooking.

Whenever there's an event, somebody's got to keep a list, and that responsibility falls to Tiawanda Colvin, Public Housing Manager.

Every year now for the last five years, the Lake Wales Housing Authority has set aside money in their budget to make sure every one of their residents has a happy Thanksgiving. Each resident received one large turkey and a $20 Publix gift card. The gift cards totaled about $2,000, according to Leon Weech, who assisted with the event.

Early Friday morning, Grove Manor residents got a little — or not so little — surprise.

Each resident of the fixed income housing development received a large turkey for Thanksgiving, coupled with a $20 Publix gift certificate. The turkeys and the certificates were purchased from the Lake Wales Housing Authority budget, according to Executive Director Al Kirkland Jr. Booker Young, a member of the Housing Authority board, said this is the fifth year straight that the Housing Authority has given away turkeys to its residents. A quiet little gathering beside a pickup truck loaded with enough turkeys for all of Grove Manor, Public Housing Manager Tiawanda Colvin kept track of those who came to fetch their bird.
