4:30 p.m. The U.S. Postal Service has authorized a unique pictorial cancellation in honor of the restoration and relocation of the cannon. The cancellation will be applied to outgoing mail at the post office for one day only.
The cannon is a replica that was placed on the 18th-century frigate in 1906 during a restoration and removed in 1927 during a second restoration. The ship became famous as Old Ironsides when it defeated the HMS Guerriere on Aug. 19, 1812, during the War of 1812.
