TALLAHASSEE (AP) — One of Florida’s incoming legislative leaders wants to make sweeping changes to the state’s ethics laws.

Sen. Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, on Tuesday said he wants to toughen conflict-of-interest rules for legislators and make it easier for the public to see financial disclosure forms.

He wants to bar elected officials from taking a job that relies on government funding. Gaetz also wants to look at banning legislators from opening up separate campaign accounts that have few limits on how the money is spent.

Gaetz is slated to become Senate president in November.

Legislators in recent years have rejected plans to tighten ethics laws despite scandals such as one involving former House Speaker Ray Sansom. A statewide grand jury convened to look at corruption issued several recommendations back in 2010.
