Wreck sends children
to the hospital
Seven people were injured after a mid-afternoon single car crash.
On Aug. 23, 2012, at 3:40 p.m. the car rider area of McLaughlin Middle School, located at 800 S. 4th St, was filled with students who were walking to their rides home or were gathered together waiting for their ride to show up, according to Lake Wales Police Deputy Chief Troy Schulze. Reports note that Dilma Guideldefiguera, a 50 year old Lake Wales resident, had just picked up her two children at the school. As she accelerated to move forward, Schulze noted she lost control of her vehicle driving over the curb, across the sidewalk, allegedly striking a bench which at least two students were sitting on, and the vehicle continued forward striking two other students, coming to rest after hitting a brick wall on the school property. Of the students who were waiting in the grass area for their ride, four of them were hit by Dilma’s vehicle as she drove across the school property, according to Schulze, who noted “Thankfully, these four children received only minor injuries. Dilma and the two children in her vehicle also received minor injuries.”
