Some of the Ford Explorer was ripped off and stayed attached to the 18-wheeler it hit Wednesday on State Road 60 in a crash that tied up traffic on the highway for a number of hours.

A Lake Wales man is in the hospital in serious condition after he was thrown from his SUV in a car wreck on State Road 60 near Alturas Road on Wednesday.
Noal H. Hickey, 54, of North Drive 90, Lake Wales, was going west on S.R. 60 nearing the intersection of Alturas Road when his Ford Explorer hit the rear of a stopped 2001 white Freightliner semi, in the left turn lane, according to reports from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
