Wire fencing and "posted" signs protect the Grassy Lake Preserve, a protected wildlife area of 186 acres off Mountain Lake Cutoff Rd. extending to the area behind Janie Howard Wilson and Frazier Field. The school hopes to access the property for science exploration, partnering with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Federation.
Lake Wales is known for its natural attractions, including Bok Tower Gardens, Mountain Lake, Spook Hill and Lake Wailes.
If students and staff at Janie Howard Wilson Elementary have their way, residents will soon have access to yet one more: the Grassy Lake Preserve.
