ORLANDO (AP) — A Board of Governors committee is recommending approval of tuition increases of up to
15 percent at Florida’s public universities.

The full board is voting on the proposal Thursday afternoon in Orlando. The committee vote was 7 to 2.

Gov. Rick Scott has opposed the increases, but board members say it would only partly offset a $300 million budget cut for the State University System. Scott and the Legislature approved the cut.

The University of Florida is seeking a 9 percent increase while the University of South Florida wants
11 percent. The other nine schools are asking for
15 percent — the legal limit.

Budget and Finance Committee Chairman Tico Perez noted 30 percent of the tuition increase must be used for need-based scholarships.
