Flag Day 2012 in Lake Wales found these four members of the Ridge Patriots flying the American flag on Hwy. 60, early Thursday morning. Motorists shared their love of the flag, if the constant horn honking was any indication. (l to r) Jane K. Thomas, Janie Nelson, Earlene Head and her husband, Ron, a retired U.S. Navy Chief Yeoman.

Flag Day was established on June 14, 1916, by President Woodrow Wilson, who issued a proclamation of the same.
By August 1949, National Flag Day was declared by an Act of Congress. Though Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, there are many — especially U.S. veterans, who enjoy celebrating the holiday by displaying the American flag.
