arias and duets
Reyna Carguill and Calvin Lee,
accompanied by local pianist Brenda Raabe, will appear in concert Sunday afternoon, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Lake Wales Arts Center, Updike Hall. The varied program features spirituals, opera arias and duets as well as excerpts from “Porgy and Bess.”
A native of Panama City, Panama, Carguill has appeared in concert and opera performances throughout the United States and abroad. Recently she performed with the Sarasota Opera in the role of Elisabeth in Verdi’s “Don Carlos” and as Lucrezia in “I due Foscari.” She also toured with the 75th anniversary production of George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” in the role of Serena.
Tenor Calvin E. Lee, best known for his comic acting roles as Monostatos in Mozart’s “Magic Flute,” has also performed in numerous productions of “Porgy and Bess,” having sung all three principal tenor roles. Recently, Lee recorded “Porgy and Bess” for Decca Records with the Nashville Symphony conducted by John Mauceri.
