STR8 UP Youth House will now open Wednesday evenings from 5 to 6:15 p.m. for extra tutoring. The ministry had offered free tutoring on Thursdays and Fridays after school. Leaders are expanding the hours to Wednesdays to accommodate more students.
Wednesday nights will be for academics only; no recreational pursuits will be available. Teachers and volunteers will be on hand to help students in all subjects; computers will be available for academic use as well.
The program times are designed to enable the youth to be able to get church on Wednesday nights.
“We decided to open an extra day when some of the athletes told us the only free time they have is Wednesday nights,” said president Sammy Telesco. “STR8 UP has a major focus on academics and felt there was sufficient need to add the extra day.”
There are plans in the works for a second story to be added in the youth house for academics. The addition will have sound-proofing and more computers. It is a much needed area, as the kids need the quiet and few distractions while studying, said vice president Dana Telesco.
“The academic addition will cost the ministry dearly, but we feel it is worth it,” said Sammy Telesco.
A car wash to help defray some of the costs will be Saturday at the Raceway service station on U.S. 27 in Lake Placid from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations can be sent by PayPal to the website at www.str8up.org.
Any qualified instructors interested in tutoring are asked to phone 863-699-1480.
