The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the death of a 42-year-old Lake Placid inmate at the county jail, a press release issued Friday said.

John Gonzalez was pronounced dead in his cell in the medical unit of the Highlands County jail. The press release said Gonzalez was found unresponsive at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. Emergency medical technicians were called to the scene and pronounced Gonzalez dead soon after.
