ARCADIA — Frostproof dominated Friday’s battle of the Bulldogs against DeSoto County, winning 61-21.

Aside from a three-minute stretch to start the second half in which DeSoto County scored two touchdowns, Friday night was all Frostproof.

Junior Kaleel Gaines scored five touchdowns, playing well at quarterback in place of his brother Xavier Gaines, who was suspended.

Frostproof led 33-0 at halftime, but had to quell a motivated DeSoto County team early on in the second half. DeSoto County scored two touchdowns to cut the lead to 33-14 when Kaleel Gaines broke a 36-yard run.

The touchdown seemed to take the energy out of DeSoto County, and Frostproof scored touchdowns on four consecutive possessions to put the game well out of reach.

Frostproof picked up right where it left off in the first half, when it established its presence on the first drive of the game by marching down into DeSoto County territory with big runs by Trevis Harrington.

After losing a fumble at the DeSoto County 21-yard line on that first drive, the Frostproof defense responded by intercepting a pass thrown by DeSoto County quarterback Kari Williams. This time, Frostproof didn’t got into the end zone with a four-yard touchdown run by Cecil Cherry.

From there, Frostproof dominated, scoring touchdowns on four of the next six first half possessions. Almost the entire first half was played in DeSoto County territory thanks to the Frostproof defense and some crucial special teams errors by DeSoto County.

DeSoto County punter Rosario Zavala dealt with high snaps all game He managed to recover the first one, but the second bounced off of his arm and was recovered by sophomore Mike Smith in the end zone for a Frostproof touchdown.

Another bad snap on the next DeSoto County possession caused Zavala to attempt a pass, which was intercepted by Cherry. That set up a touchdown pass from Kaleel Gaines to the third Gaines brother, Kijana.

Frostproof is now 5-2 and 1-1 in the district, and will visit Lakeland Christian next Friday. That game starts at 7 p.m.
