The competition in Class 3A District 4 figures to get much tougher in the coming weeks for Frostproof. But it was a breeze for the Bulldogs Friday night as they flattened the Bishop McLaughlin Hurricanes 56-0.

The Bulldogs, who improved their record to 4-0, recorded their second consecutive shutout.

As it happened a lot this season, penalties once again hurt Frostproof. The Bulldogs. as they have also done, overcame them with big play after big play.

An 85-yard punt return by Kaleel Gaines was wiped out by a block in the back penalty after McLaughlin’s first possession. The same penalty took away another Kaleel punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

But Frostproof struck quickly. On the next play after the penalty from the Bulldog 42, quarterback Xavier Gaines found a wide open Jarviel Hart who raced into the end zone to complete the 58-yard scoring.

Lamar Bobb converted the extra point kick to make it 7-0 with 5:33 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs used the big play to go by two touchdowns. From his own 40, Xavier sprinted 60 yards to the end zone.

Another penalty took away the score. This time it was a holding call against the Bulldogs.

No problem. Xavier repeated his previous run, only carrying the ball 75 yards for the touchdown.

Lamar’s kick made it 14-0 with 2:58 remaining the in the quarter.

A blocked punt set up the Bulldogs’ third touchdown of the quarter. Cecil Cherry cruised in from the 4 for the score and with 1:21 to go it was 21-0 following Lamar’s PAT.

Bishop McLaughlin started from its own 45 on the next possession. The Bulldogs defense forced a turnover as Hart intercepted a R,J. Perciavalle pass at the Frostproof 36.

The visitors took just four plays to travel 64 yards. Xavier hooked up with Trevis Herrington on a 33-yard touchdown pass. Jaylyn McKinney’s 25-yard scamper preceded the score. Lamar’s kick pushed the lead to 28-0 at the 9:54 mark of the second period.

A short punt that traveled just 2 yards set up the fifth touchdown of the half for Frostproof. Herrington capped a short drive with a seven-yard scoring run. Lamar booted another PAT to give the visitors a commanding 35-0 advantage with 3:06 remaining in the second period.

In the third quarter, McKinney scored on a 3-yard run with 6:50 remaining, Lamar’s kick made it 42-0.

Kaleel had a run that finally counted for a touchdown with a 13-yard dash into the end zone. Another PAT by Lamar extended the lead to 49-0 at the 1:36 mark of the third period.

Deonte Perry closed out the scoring with a 43-yard run with 1:14 left in the game. Lamar was perfect on PATs for the game.

McLaughlin dropped to 1-3 for the season.

The Bulldogs will conclude their three-game road trip on Sept. 27 with a game in Wauchula against Hardee. Game time is 7 p.m.
