A Lakeland teenager, recently turned 15, pled to a charge of manslaughter Wednesday in the choking death of her newborn baby.

The defendant, who will not be named, was charged in September in the death of her infant son. The baby was reportedly healthy at birth. She hid the birth from her parents, telling police later that she didn’t want to harm her relationship with her family. She allegedly pried the baby out with scissors during the delivery, then choked him to death. She then placed the baby in a bag in her closet, where her mother found him days later. The Kathleen High School student had told her mother initially that she had a miscarriage and flushed the fetus down the toilet.
