PORT CHARLOTTE — Most of the 66 men invited to the Rays’ spring training will not play in a game that counts until April 1 or later, and manager Joe Maddon wants to get them ready for the season with what he calls a “slow dance” over the 36 spring games.

But he also needs to manage those players heading to the World Baseball Classic, who need to be ready much earlier.
