TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A proposal that would give judges the final say on whether a drunken driver could opt for an interlock ignition device after a DUI conviction has been blocked — at least temporarily — by the Senate Transportation Committee.

The panel said there were too many unanswered questions to go ahead with the proposal by Sen. Dorothy Hukill, a Port Orange Republican who was trying to shepherd the measure (SB 796) through this session in time to have it take effect later in the year.

But an amended version of Hukill’s original proposal left too many questions for her Senate colleagues, who postponed taking action on the bill.

Several committee members said they were concerned that the expense of expanding an already successful program could make it unaffordable for many offenders.
