NORTH PORT — Holding a fork in the air, Sherry Smart said people could be attacked with “one of these” or a butter knife, demonstrating that guns aren’t the only way to harm someone.

During a North Port Area Republican Club meeting Wednesday night at Olde World Restaurant, members and guests discussed oppositions to legislators potentially passing more gun-control laws. Some said the government is renaming “gun control” with “gun safety” to downplay what they believe is President Obama taking away Americans’ rights to bear arms.
