The heated standoff between Charlotte County and the local firefighters’ bargaining unit grew more intense this week with union officials calling the commission’s decision to reject the union’s offer to settle ongoing contract disputes nothing more than political payback for refusing to endorse incumbents this election season.

At a public impasse hearing Tuesday, the commission sided with the administration by voting to accept staff’s recommendations on a list of collective bargaining issues the county’s labor attorney alleges are in dispute.
