Son to finish late dad’s epic bike trek

This photo of Pete Cornell was shot in Alberta, Canada, early on a cross-country trip to Key West that was cut short when Cornell died after being hit by a truck in Georgia. Petes friends in the Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club erected a sign in his honor at the spot where he died, urging drivers to drive safely. His son plans to finish the ride.

Don Cornell, Amy Armstrong -- the children of cyclist Pete Cornell, and finacee Sue Pavlat gathered Aug. 10 for a celebration of Pete's life in Gulf Cove. Pete died July 26 before finishing a cycling trip cross country from Alaska to Key West. Dan plans to finish the ride.
GULF COVE — Friends, family and cyclists in the 550-member Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club are still reeling from the death of Pete Cornell, hit by a truck driver in July on a Georgia highway while he cycled cross-country.
Pete was a leader of the Big Dogs, an elite group of riders within the ranks of Coastal Cruisers — about 20 to 25 cyclists ranging in age from mid-50s to 82 — who ride fast.
