PORT CHARLOTTE — The Sarasota High School girls basketball team overcame sluggish offense with a crippling defense to beat Port Charlotte 49-39 in a District 7A-11 contest Tuesday.

The Sailors held the Pirates to nine points in the second and third quarters combined and all but secured the top spot in the district tournament at the end of the month.
