George H. Truman

George H. Truman, 91, of Lake Suzy, Fla., passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Tidewell Hospice in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Mr. Truman was born July 3, 1922, in South Bend, Ind., to George L. and Gladys (nee Geyer) Truman, and moved to the Punta Gorda, Fla., and Lake Suzy area in 1990.

Prior to moving to this area, George lived in South Bend for 62 years, before retiring to the Diamond Lake-Cassopolis, Mich., area. He graduated from Riley High School and attended Kalamazoo College. George worked for A.P. Green, a worldwide refractory company in engineering, where he traveled to promote sales and installation of products, along with development of new materials and methods of installing by the pneumatic application. He was a past officer of Elks Lodge 2606 and 235, Punta Gorda and South Bend, respectively; a member of the Moose Lodge 2121 and American Legion Post 110; and was an officer of the Charlotte County, Fla., Royal Order of Ponce de Leon Conquistadors.

George was an active bowler and secretary of the Senior Leagues in retirement. He was also an avid Notre Dame Football fan, with his wife Ginny, with whom he attended games for 61 years. George was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the 99th Infantry Division, and received The Presidential Citation and the Combat Infantryman’s badge during the “Battle of the Bulge” — European Theater.

George is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Virginia “Ginny” (nee Dean) Truman; daughters, Sharon A. Truman of New Bern, N.C., and Jorga L. Tucker of North Fort Myers, Fla.; grandson, David Straw of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services with Military Honors and inurnment will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Fla. Please visit George’s tribute wall at www.schelmfh.com to share memories and to send condolences to the Truman family.
