DESOTO COUNTY — DeSoto County High School head baseball coach Brett Crutchfield, who was suspended with pay last week by the school district, apparently had a brush with the law back in Indiana. However, because he was never arrested or convicted, it did not appear in a background check.

School Superintendent Dr. Karyn Gary explained that a background check would only reveal a criminal conviction. It does not reveal civil lawsuits as was the case with Crutchfield. A Google search on the coach revealed that on April 13, 2012, Crutchfield was placed on paid leave while Crown Point High School (in Crown Point, Ind.) investigated allegations of misconduct, as reported by the Post-Tribune.
