On Monday evening, the citizens of Bartow were given the opportunity to share their thoughts regarding the “God Bless America” signs before the City Commissioners and national media. I felt the need to say a word of thanks. First of all, we need to thank the Mayor, Mr. James Clements, the City Manager, Mr. George Long, the City Attorney, Mr. Sean Parker, and City Commissioners: Mr. Pat Huff, Mr. J. Adrian Jackson, Mr. Leo Longworth, and Mr. Wayne Lewis for listening to the citizens and agreeing to take another look at the sign ordinance.
We also need to thank Mr. Greg Lamb, the Director of Code Enforcement, and his staff for taking the flood of phone calls with integrity and grace from people around the United States. Little did we know how much attention we would receive from a little sign with three simple words “God Bless America.” This leads me to thank the citizens of Bartow for standing up for the truth and unashamedly standing up for our faith in the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ our Lord. On Monday evening, I saw the America I grew up in as a child, an America where it’s citizens and city government knew how to behave in the right way and work together to resolve a problem that touched a nerve across the nation.
I hope people had the opportunity to see the real Bartow, Florida, full of hard working people who not only teach their children right from wrong, but also demonstrate it in a public forum. It was certainly a reason to say, “We are proud to be part of the Bartow Community.” Thank you again and “God Bless America.”
