Shopaholic’s dream: Shop and eat, then shop more

Mary Dunn and Sherise Wheelis have opened the Main Street Hideaway Deli in This N That Consignment antiques and collectibles store, 545 E. Main St. in Bartow. Now browsers can shop till they drop, eat lunch, then shop some more. The deli is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and during special events, will be open on weekends.

If your idea of a perfect day is browsing antiques and collectibles, stopping for a yummy lunch, then shopping some more — you’re in luck. And now you can do all this in one place.

Mary Dunn and her daughter Sherise Wheelis have opened a deli inside This and That Consignment, a store full of collectibles, antiques and home decor. It’s called Sherise’s Main Street Hideaway Deli.

Open weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., the women said they want to “make people happy and be affordable for everyone.”

Their prices reflect that goal, with sandwiches and subs ranging from $2 to $6 (with chips included) salads ranging from $4 to $6, and sides from 50 cents to $1. How long has it been since you’ve seen homemade brownies for 50 cents? You’ll see them there. Beverages (including slushies) cost from $1 to $1.75.

“This summer we plan to add soft serve ice cream to the menu, Sherise said.

According to Sherise and Mary, the stuffed tomato on a bed of lettuce, with choice of chicken salad or tuna, is already becoming a customer favorite.

Initially planned as a coffee and dessert place, it has, to say the least, grown.

This is the first time Mary and Sherise have had their own deli, which they describe as a longtime dream of theirs. But they have worked in the food service business in one capacity or other for most of their lives.

When the owner of This and That had a large area in the back of the shop become available, she told Mary and Sherise about it, and after “lots and lots of painting,” and some rearranging, they were ready for customers. The deli has been open for about three weeks, and Mary said they’ve been happy to see some customers come back two or three times. “We want to do a deli the way it should be done,” Mary said. “The main thing is to please our customers.”
